Scarecrow day - 12th Jul 2008

Now that the plants in the Victorian cottage garden are springing into life, the gardeners have discovered that is not just Ma Meek and her family who are interested in the delicious traditional vegetables that they have been tending. Birds have shown a fondness for the carrots, cabbages and peas; what the garden needs is a Scarecrow to fend off these feathered thieves. Visitors to the centre on the 12th of July will be invited to join the team at the Heritage Centre as, using traditional materials, they put together some scarecrows to guard the precious crop. For those visitors wanting something slightly smaller than a life-sized scarecrow, there will also be the opportunity to make authentic Corn Dollies – symbolic figures made from straw which have been associated with the gathering in of crops since the of the ancient Britons. It is hoped that the dollies will bring in a bumper harvest at the Heritage Centre!
