Join Queen Victoria's Army at Caldicot Castle - 25th Aug 2008

Queen Victoria's Army descends on Caldicot Castle on Sunday 23rd and Bank Holiday Monday 24th August to recreate life at the time of the Zulu and Boer Wars. From 11am to 5pm each day visitors can meet the army and watch as they train for battle. The 1879 group (24th Regiment of Foot and 2nd Warwickshire Regiment) are leading the entertainment. Men from this part of South Wales would have been recruited to fight with the '24th', who became the South Wales Borderers. This meant that the battles fought in distant South Africa, including Rorke's Drift where eleven Victoria Crosses were won in a single action, would often have touched the lives of families close to home. The 1880s was also a decade of great change at the castle, as Joseph Cobb transformed it from a ruin to a comfortable family home, so the event gives a flavour of what life would have been like for families, such as the Cobbs, and across the social scale in Britain at the time. Admission to the event is £3.75 for adults and £2.50 for concessions and also includes entry to the grounds and restored medieval towers of the castle in its beautiful setting of tranquil gardens and a wooded country park. Monmouthshire residents qualify for discounted entry to the event of £2.50 for adults and £1.50 for concessions with a museum pass or proof of address.
