Lydney

Lydney Docks

Lydney is a small town close to the River Severn on the A48 midway between Gloucester and Chepstow.  The town is a busy shopping and commercial centre with a wide range of leisure facilities and tourist attractions nearby.  Lydney is the focus for a number of small villages on the east of the Forest of Dean including Blakeney, Yorkley and Bream and villages close to the Severn including Awre, Alvington and Woolaston.  Most of these villages have a selection of accommodation and pubs and they are all an ideal base for exploring the Forest.

Lydney has the only railway station in the Forest on the line between Gloucester and Chepstow.

In the past the Severn was busy trading route between Bristol and Gloucester and Lydney grew as a port to export coal from the Forest of Dean.  Lydney Docks have recently been restored and are well worth visiting to see the River and understand their previous importance.  The tidal range of the river at this point is 12m and speed at which the tide comes in is impressive.

There are a number of attractions close to Lydney including Taurus Crafts, Dean Forest Railway and the Lydney Spring Gardens.
