Newent is in the most northern part of the Forest of Dean District close to the borders of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. The most striking feature in Newent is the large number of traditional half-timbered black and white buildings, the best of which is the 17th century market hall, still used today for council meetings.
Newent is a small market town of about 5000, serving a largely rural area, with a good range of small shops for both residents and visitors alike. There are interesting pubs, cafes and restaurants in both town and the surrounding villages. The International Birds of Prey Centre at Cliffords Mesne is well worth a visit as is the Three Choirs Vineyard, one of Britain’ s largest wine producers. Besides wine, the area is known for cider and perry and nearby Dymock is the home of Stinking Bishop cheese loved by Wallace and Gromit. Newent, and particularly Dymock are the within the Golden Triangle, so called because of the large number of daffodils growing wild in the woods and meadows. It is worth coming to Newent just to see the spectacular daffodils, but of course there is much more.
In September, the unique Newent Onion Fayre is held when the town is closed to traffic for the day. There is always plenty happening including the onion eating competition! The renowned rock music producer Joe Meek, famed for Telstar, was born in Newent and in October the town hosts a Joe Meek festival.
